This FAQ is updated periodically. It’s part of our knowledge base and supports you throughout your Range Rules experience. Each entry presents a question followed by an answer.
Question: What is Range Rules?
Answer: Range Rules is a content-delivery platform that helps content creators build interactive learning assessments in support of shooting sports, firearms training, certifications, and firing‑range safety programs. It gives you everything you need to create your own custom training assessments and knowledge checks-without the complexity of distributing them or collecting results. Our mission is to empower the people who teach, lead, and set the standard for others by offering these simple, effective tools that help you carry the safety-first message forward.
Question: How do I log in to Range Rules?
Answer: Click the little gear at the top of any page to access the Coordinator dashboard. You can also select the middle option on the home page, “Sign in to the Coordinator dashboard” Either method will take you to the login screen. Enter your Coordinator email and password, then press Continue to access your account. Once you’re logged in, clicking the little gear or the Coordinator dashboard option will take you directly to your dashboard. If you have not created an account yet, you will need to complete the sign‑up process first.
Question: How do I test my questions and answers?
Answer: From the Coordinator dashboard, click “Test question and answer sets.” This screen shows three ways to access and test your Q&A sets. You can also test a Q&A set from within the question and answer designer by clicking the green button on the screen "Test Q&A set."
Question: How do I see my results?
Answer: From the Coordinator dashboard, Click View results and statistics from Q&A sessions. Range Rules provides detailed metrics, live monitoring as participants complete sets, 14 statistical measures, score distribution charts, and Excel export capability. The screens include descriptive guidance to help you interpret and use the data. See the user guide for more details.
Question: Can I edit a published Q&A set?
Answer: Yes, but with caution. If a Q&A set is published (marked as Active) and NO participants are currently taking it, you can freely edit by returning to the "Manage general settings" for the Q&A set and set it back to draft mode. If participants are currently taking it, Range Rules will set a lock preventing edits and display a message indicating that active sessions are in progress. In this case if you access the Manage general settings screen, you will see guidance on how to proceed if you must make changes. From there you will have the option to Force Clear sessions, but do so only when you are certain all participants have finished and a session has become “orphaned.” In that rare situation, it is safe to clear the lock with the Force Clear option. As an added safeguard, any session lock will automatically expire if no participant activity is detected for 15 minutes.
Question: Why does nothing happen when I click “Testing” from the question form?
Answer: This almost always means your browser is blocking pop‑ups. When you click test from the question designer form, Range Rules wants to open a participant view in a new browser tab or window. Most browsers block these pop‑ups by default, and when that happens, the testing window never opens. You should see a small notification in your browser indicating that a pop‑up was blocked. It will offer options such as Allow or Block, either “this time” or “always.” Choose Allow for Range Rules so the test window can open normally. If you need more help, check your browser’s settings or help guide for instructions on allowing pop‑ups for trusted sites.
Question: Can I see all of the example questions and answers?
Answer: Yes. Open the Manage general settings screen and go to Step 6. There you’ll find a link that displays all provided example and illustrative Q&A content, along with important guidance on how to use these templates appropriately.
Question: Could someone guess my access code and get into my questions?
Answer: The Access Code is intentionally short to keep things easy for your participants while still maintaining strong security. Even though it’s short, the odds of someone randomly guessing your code are extremely small-about 1 in 16.7 million. Behind the scenes, Range Rules has additional safeguards that detect and block guessing attempts, so your Q&A sets remain protected.
Question: My users can't see the questions, where did they go?
Answer: Check the “Close Date” selected in the Q&A set’s General settings (Step 9). If the date has already been reached, the system automatically returns the Q&A set to Draft mode, which hides it from participants (users). Update the close date to a future date and switch the Q&A set back to Active. Once it’s active again, your users will be able to see and begin a knowledge check.
Question: Why do I have to Force Clear to edit a question when I’m testing?
Answer: This is expected behavior. When you test a Q&A set, you are running it exactly the same way your participants would. While a session is active-even if it’s your own test session-Range Rules temporarily locks editing to protect data by preventing mid-session changes. If you try to edit a question while a session is still open, you’ll see a red alert indicating that editing is disabled. If this happens during your own testing, it often means you still have an active session open in another tab or browser window. Close any extra tabs or browsers and try again. If a session remains stuck or “orphaned,” you can use Force Clear active sessions from the General settings screen to remove the lock and continue editing.
Question: Why can't I use simple HTML markup to bold words?
Answer: For security reasons, HTML markup isn’t allowed in any entry text. Even seemingly harmless tags can create a pathway for injection attacks or other vulnerabilities. HTML imput is disabled to protect your account and participant data.
Question: I receive individual results by email, how can I see all results together?
Answer: From the Coordinator Dashboard, click “View results and statistics from sessions.” The next screen lists all your Q&A sets. The first option-highlighted in blue-is “Aggregated overview of results across all Q&A sessions.” Selecting it gives you a combined view of every session you’ve run, based on the results currently stored in the system. Whether you choose the aggregated view or a specific Q&A set, you’ll be able to review the Ordinal Score Distribution, 14 performance metrics, your current data‑storage usage, and a live list of your 25 most recent sessions. You can also export five standard XLSX reports anytime for deeper analysis.
Question: Why do you call Range Rules a content delivery platform?
Answer: Range Rules is a tool for delivering the training content you create, not a source of certified or authoritative instruction. As a content-delivery platform (or sharing platform) Range Rules provides a structured place for you to create, organize, and distribute your own questions, answers, scenarios, certifications, and other instructional materials, including deciding which answers are considered “correct” or “incorrect.” The system does not supply authoritative training or certified guidance; instead, it gives you the tools to build and deliver the content you create and own. Once created, your materials can be deployed to participants through simple, consistent delivery methods such as QR‑code access, allowing you to manage how your content is presented (and results collected) without relying on external systems.
Question: What type of computer software do you use?
Answer: As a general practice, we don’t publicly disclose the specific software or internal technologies we use. What we can share is that Range Rules operates on a modern, cloud‑based hosting environment designed for reliability, speed, and data protection. Our contracted datacenter provides redundant network paths, continuous system monitoring, and enterprise‑grade physical security with professionally managed uptime, environmental controls, and 24/7 datacenter oversight.
Question: If I get a Range Rules Pro version will my existing stuff be available?
Answer: Yes, if you sign-up for the Pro version all of your existing content will still be available provided your trial version is not older then 60 days, for details, please refer to the full Terms & Conditions of Use. Instruction for signing up for a Pro version can be found at the bottom of the home page here.
Question: Why do I have to check the box that asking me if I am a human?
Answer: It’s checking for bots. When you check that box, the system looks at how you interact with the page, not just the fact that the box was clicked. A bot is a computer program that imitates a person but isn’t one. Bots can automatically fill out forms, click buttons, or send messages-usually extremely fast and repeatedly. The website isn’t questioning you personally; it’s simply protecting itself from automated software pretending to be a real user.
Question: How many Questions and answers can I have?
Answer: Free trial accounts allow for 2 sets of 15 questions for 30 days. Pro accounts allow for 10 sets for 360 days. A full description of the Pro account benefits can be found at the bottom of the page here.
Question: How can I stop the emails from going into the junk folder?
Answer: This is a common issue, especially with large providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and others, and doesn't just happen to Range Rules emails. It’s usually easy to correct. Open one of our emails in your Spam or Junk folder and look for a button such as “Not spam” or “Report as not junk.” Click it-sometimes you may need to do this more than once. If you use filters or rules, confirm they aren’t redirecting our messages. Another effective step is to add our email address to your contacts. Most providers treat messages from known contacts as trusted, which helps ensure our emails land in your inbox going forward.
Question: I locked my account, how can I unlock it?
Answer: You’ll need to wait 5 minutes from your last login attempt, then use the Login help button (on the Coordinator dashboard login screen) to reset your password. This lockout period is an important security measure designed to stop what’s known as a brute-force attack. Your account locks temporarily to protect it from automated password‑guessing attempts. By slowing down repeated attempts, the system makes this kind of attack impractical and protects your account from unauthorized access. Once the 5‑minute lockout expires, you’ll be able to reset your password and sign in again.
Question: I need to change my email, where's the option to do this?
Answer: There's no system admin function you can use to change your email address on your own, so just reach out and we’ll take care of it with you. Because email-change attacks are common, we only switch an address after confirming it’s really you. You’ll need access to your current email, and if you don’t have it anymore, we’ll ask a few quick account-specific questions to verify ownership before making the change.
Question: Can I delete the first set I created when I opened my account?
Answer: Yes. You can delete all of the questions and answers in that set and start fresh. These options are available directly within the Question & answer designer screens. Just keep in mind that deleting large amounts of data very frequently can trigger internal security safeguards. The general settings for a Q&A set cannot be deleted-only edited-but editing them is all you need to fully reset and rebuild your set.
Question: I loaded the questions when I setup my account but I want to change them around, how can I do this?
Answer: You can open your Q&A set in the Designer, click any question, and edit it directly on your screen. However, there is currently no built‑in feature to reorder questions. This enhancement is under consideration for a future release. For now, the best workaround is simple:
• Copy and paste the question and its answer choices into a plain‑text editor (like Notepad).
• Paste them back into the Designer in the new sequence.
If you prefer working in Excel, you can also export all questions and answers, reorder them there, and then rebuild the set by copying and pasting from the spreadsheet. Coordinator dashboard >> View results and statistics from Q&A sessions >> Select the Q&A set >> XLSX Export Panel (at the bottom of the screen) >> Q&A Set Details.
Question: What happens to my questions when the date I set for them to close is reached?
Answer: When you set a close this Q&A set date in the Q&A set’s General settings and mark the set as Active or Published, participants can use it up until the date you selected. Once that date arrives, the system automatically switches the Q&A set back to Draft mode. This makes the set unavailable to participants while keeping all your content intact for future editing or republishing.
Question: How long is my data saved?
Answer: You have full control over how long your data is stored. The system provides detailed guidance on data‑retention options in both the General settings screen and the Reports & Statistics screen. While you’re given generous storage, results from very active Q&A sets can accumulate quickly. For that reason, you can choose to automatically purge older records that no longer hold value. Refer to the screens mentioned above for specific options and recommendations. Trial accounts remain active for 30 days. After that period, if the account has not been upgraded to a Pro plan, all associated data will be marked for removal. For more details, please refer to the full Terms & Conditions of Use.
Question: Do you offer telephone support?
Answer: We’re a small team, and we maintain and improve the system in our off‑hours. Because of that, nearly all support is handled through email, where we can respond thoughtfully and efficiently. In very rare cases, when an issue truly requires it, we may arrange a brief phone call-but email will always be the primary and fastest way to get help.
Question: Can I get my ideas added to the system?
Answer: Possibly! We’re always interested in thoughtful suggestions. Send us an email describing your ideas as clearly as you can-what you’d like to see, why it would help, and how you imagine it working. We review all submissions, and while we can’t guarantee every idea will make it into the system, many improvements have come directly from user feedback.
